“Step By Step”
How many times have we gotten distracted from something we were trying to accomplish? Recently I set a goal to save a certain amount of money in a specific time frame. I was completely committed to the process, but it seemed like as soon as I pledged and promised myself that I was going to follow through no matter what, my car started to have all sorts of issues. I ended up at the car shop 3 weeks in a row, and all for different reasons. Of course I had to use some of the funds that I was planning to save to pay for the unexpected repairs needed for my car. I was a bit frustrated and for a moment doubted myself thinking that I would not be able to accomplish my goal, but I had to realize that sometimes things happen that are out of our control. After I was able to put things into perspective I continued with my original goal with the same enthusiasm that I started with. Although my car issues set me back a little I was still able to reach my goal eventually.
One of the main aspects in not allowing distractions or obstacles to be a factor while in pursuit of our goals is to first establish a clear understanding of what the goals are and what specifically we are wanting to accomplish. A great tool in staying focused is to write our goals down and then create a plan and or vision board for them. When we write plans down and have a visual for them it not only keeps them present on our minds, but it also makes them more real which will keep us motivated and inspired to stay the course. When we actually see our goals written down it allows us to become organized so that we are able to see our progress as it occurs. Being able to see our goals on a daily basis will help weed out the distractions while keeping what's important at heart. When this is at the forefront it will be easier to not be phased by the obstacles that come our way because they will be irrelevant to the bigger picture.
It is also important to know who we are when we are reaching our goals. For instance, if we are the type of person who gets frustrated quickly, when a distraction arises, we will be able to recognize that it is just that, a distraction, and use the temporary inconvenience as an opportunity to better ourselves. Instead of getting frustrated, put things into perspective, utilize patience and realize that distractions are bound to occur when accomplishing goals, it's all part of the process. When we are aware of our strengths and our weaknesses we will be able to build character as we practice an alternate way of handling unfavorable circumstances. This will soon become habit allowing growth to take place in our lives which will only make us better when it's all said and done.
Distractions and obstacles are a part of life and will seem to appear from out of nowhere but the key is to expect them, but not allow them to take over what we are striving to obtain. Never doubt your ability to achieve what you want to accomplish. As author, Jack Canfield states, "successful people maintain a positive focus in life no matter what is going on around them. They stay focused on their past successes rather than their past failures, and on the next action steps they need to take to get them closer to the fulfillment of their goals rather than all the distractions that life presents to them." Keep your eyes on the prize!!
